The rosters are out for the 2015 MLB Futures Game, to be played July 12 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati -- the U.S. roster can be found here and the World roster is here -- and, as usual, they're filled with most of the top prospects still in the minor leagues, but with a couple of key omissions. This year the game has been affected more than usual by early promotions of top prospects, although there are still a few positional logjams that will keep players like Ryan McMahon out of the game despite worthy performances.

Here's a look at the top prospects on the rosters, a quartet of players with interesting back stories, and thoughts on some players who should be in the game but aren't (although the rosters frequently change due to injuries and call-ups). Of course, I profiled many of the players below in my preseason Top 100 prospects.

Top prospects

The rosters include four of the top 10 prospects in my most recent update (June 19); two are out recovering from injuries while Yoan Moncada hasn't performed at a level that would merit his selection (and the Red Sox have several more deserving candidates anyway). Corey Seager isn't in the game, but there's a good chance he'll be in the majors around that time anyway, and considering he was in the Futures Game last year, there's less of a necessity to have him in it again. Sure, it would be great to have the game's No. 1 prospect out there, but I understand the desire to get some different players involved.

That makes Philadelphia shortstop J.P. Crawford the best prospect in the Futures Game -- he's already performing well in Double-A at age 20 -- followed by Nationals right-hander Lucas Giolito, Texas outfielder Nomar Mazara, Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers and Cubs catcher Kyle Schwarber.
