As I have in previous years, I'm going through position groups to provide a look at where teams will find value (and where they won't) this offseason in free agency. I will also discuss some interesting trade targets.
A look at starting pitchers market kicks off the series for 2013.
Best values
The starting pitching market this year has a number of free agents coming off years marred by injuries who project much better if they're healthy in 2014 and beyond.
Tim Hudson, RHP (Free-agent ranking: 21): Hudson was having another solid year with that ground balls-and-strikes formula before a grisly ankle injury in late July ended his season. His age is a concern, and his fastball has started to lose a little velocity, but at 38 years old and coming off that injury he's unlikely to be looking for a long-term deal.
He's a mid-rotation starter with the potential to pitch like a No. 2 for a time, and a fit for any club with solid infield defense.
