Cespedes deal could be great if the Mets move him from center field

The Mets would do right by Yoenis Cespedes if they moved him out of center field and into a corner outfield spot. Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire

Yoenis Cespedes' four-year, $110 million deal is probably a small overpay for the type of player we can expect him to be going forward, but the New York Mets can maximize their return on this investment by getting him the heck out of center field.

Cespedes is a great player if he's in an outfield corner. The Mets, hamstrung by their own roster construction last year, lacked an everyday option in center, so they put Cespedes there for nearly 500 innings, and he was at least in the running for the worst defensive center fielder in baseball. His WAR totals are misleading in this case, because he was asked to play a position he's not capable of playing when, in fact, there is a position -- two, really -- he can play well, left or right field.
